Our Homeschool Curriculum

I often get asked what curriculum we use for our homeschool. There are countless choices for curriculum options (which seems to grow as homeschooling gains popularity). I have tried a variety of curricula and definitely have certain favorites, but I also am open to trying a new curriculum if I believe it will be a better fit for our family!

When I first started homeschooling, I was blessed by a family friend who gave me My Father’s World Kindergarten homeschool program. We loved that program! My daughter still remembers the songs and the unit studies that we learned about during those Kindergarten days. We enjoyed My Father’s World so much so, that we continued to use it for first grade. My Father’s World is a unit study based curriculum, which I like, but I also felt like I was ready to try something new after having two years of homeschooling under my belt!

For my third year of homeschooling, I now had two school aged children-a second grader and a kindergartener. I pieced different curriculum together and we had a great year. I enjoyed putting together my own curriculum to make it fit my children’s learning styles, interests, and levels. We discovered Math U See, which has been an incredible addition (pun intended) to our homeschool curriculum! As an English major and a more creative person, I have always struggled with math. Math U See is a blessing to me as a homeschool mom, and it also has proven to be a great math curriculum for my children who are thriving in mathematics.

We are now half way through this school year, and I have a third grader, first grader, and preschooler! So what curriculum are we using? Here’s our list of curriculum for the 2015-2016 school year:

Third Grade

  • Math U See Beta
  • Apologia: Land Animals of the Fifth Day (with accompanying Notebook Journal)
  • Beautiful Feet: Geography
  • Story of the World: Volume 1 (with accompanying student sheets)
  • Spelling You See: Wild Tales
  • Handwriting without Tears: Cursive

First Grade

  • Math U See Alpha
  • Apologia: Land Animals of the Fifth Day (with accompanying Notebook Journal)
  • Beautiful Feet: Geography (mostly he will sit in on the lessons and listen to the story)
  • Story of the World: Volume 1 (with accompanying student sheets)
  • Spelling You See: Jack and Jill
  • Handwriting without Tears: Printing Power

  • My Father’s World Preschool Curriculum
  • Five in a Row Volume 1-3 (I choose different books and do modified lessons for her)
  • Usborne Wipe Clean Activity Books (these are wonderful and can be used over and over again!)

Included in our curriculum is a variety of “living books” which enrich our homeschool studies! I still tend to gravitate towards unit studies and find myself at the library picking out several books that expand on the lessons that we are learning in history, geography, and science.

Additionally, I have my children enrolled in homeschool classes that are enrichment classes for science, art, math, and physical education!

Do you have a favorite curriculum that you are using? I would love to hear your thoughts!
