“Holy spirit, I surrender,
take me where you want to go,
Plant me by your living water,
Plant me deep so I can grow.
Jesus, you’re the one, who sets my spirit free,
Use me Lord, glorify, your holy name through me.”
There are two music artists whose songs can evoke intense emotion and move me to tears on a consistent basis. Keith Green and Josh Garrels. I grew up hearing the music of Keith Green played throughout my house; and the passionate love for Christ that resonates throughout his music is powerful! I have been listening to Keith Green for over 30 years now, and I still experience the reverent worship and honoring of the Lord through the songs that he wrote. If you haven’t read Keith Green’s biography, “No Compromise“, it is a must read. That book was influential in my life during my late teens/early 20s when I was wish washy with my faith. His testimony touched me and caused me to rethink my current state of faith.
“There’s a way that seems right to a man
Until he’s in over head and he don’t understand
How the plans he made only led him astray
But every good gift comes down from above
From the Lord of light like a labor of love
Upon the child who waits for Him”
I hadn’t really had a similar experience with lyrics and musical passion until I heard the music of Josh Garrels. Background story: my husband lost his father after a terrible battle trying to fight a rare form of cancer. My husband found a song that Josh Garrels sang with the group “Beautiful Eulogy”, and that song literally helped my husband through the intense grieving process of losing his father too soon. The song is called “Anchor”. Go listen to it. Lyrically and emotionally, it is a significant song in our lives.
I am drawn to poetic and passionate lyrics that are about the life journey of faith and the worship of our Lord Jesus Christ. Josh Garrels is a gifted lyricist with a passion for the Lord. His testimony and journey of faith are reflected in his songs and you can feel the raw truth through his albums.
Authentic, real worship and authentic, real feelings about walking out our faith make for incredible, relatable music.
I love hearing the lyric in the song “Beyond the Blue” by Josh Garrels that says,”A beggar could be king within the shadows, of the wing” (Josh Garrels, Beyond the Blue) The imagery in those words is a powerful reminder that despite what someone looks like on the outside, their true identity in Christ is royalty!
I highly recommend every album from Keith Green and from Josh Garrels. Their passion for Christ is evident and you will feel inspired, encouraged, and thankful for our Amazing God who sent His Son, Jesus Christ to save us and redeem us!
