Triumphs of Faith

Hebrews 11:1

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

It is so incredibly hard to not see things. And to not be in control. And to feel like you can’t even catch a small glimpse of what is ahead of you.

Faith: complete trust or confidence in someone or something.

Complete trust? That has been a challenge for me. Complete means “to the greatest extent or degree; total.” Total means absolute. There is no wiggle room when I am looking at the definitions that continue to take it further and further. Faith in God is a complete, total, absolute confidence and trust to the greatest extent. Wow. I have definitely been challenged by this revelation. Sure, I always have known what faith is and I use the word faith almost daily. But recently, I have had to really look into what faith means and what it means for me to proclaim that I have faith in God.

I have found that it is so much easier to have faith in God when things are generally going my way. It’s in the tough and trying times where I am faced with the reality of what faith truly means. Will I continue to have absolute trust in God during the times where I can not even see one foot in front of me?

James 1:2-4 says, “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (emphasis mine)

I love the song “Give Me Faith” sung by For All Seasons with words and lyrics by Chris Brown, Wade Joye, Mack Brock & London Gatch. The lyrics really capture what I have been thinking and praying about for the last several months.

Give Me Faith

I need You
To soften my heart and break me apart
I need You
To open my eyes, to see that You’re shaping my life

All I am, I surrender

Give me faith to trust what You say
That You’re good and Your love is great
I’m broken inside, I give You my life

I need You
To soften my heart and break me apart
I need You
To pierce through the dark and cleanse every part of me

All I am, I surrender

Give me faith to trust what You say
That You’re good and Your love is great
I’m broken inside, I give You my life

And I may be weak but Your Spirit’s strong in me
My flesh may fail, but my God, You never will

Give me faith to trust what You say
That You’re good and Your love is great
I’m broken inside, I give You my life

And I may be weak but Your Spirit’s strong in me
My flesh may fail, but my God, You never will

Hebrews 11:6

“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”
